Me and My Big Mouth… and A Solid Offer…😮❗

You know me, right? I opened my big mouth and before I knew it, I’d stepped into something that I hadn't expected.

It all began simply enough, yesterday afternoon. I’d stopped in a tranquil park and walked out of my car to breathe in the fresh, pine forest air. Phone in hand, I took a random picture and was putting my camera away when I heard a voice.

"Is your car for sale?"

The question came from a young man who was sitting in a nearby black sedan. I hadn't even remotely considered selling my vehicle. I'd just changed the rear disc brakes, put in a new front suspension and replaced the tie rods and ball joints. The car handled like a precision-tuned appendage to my body. But, I answered with the first stupid thing that flew into my brain.

"Sure, if the price was right," and I waited for the young man's reply.

"What number did you have in mind?" was his response.

"Throw one at me," was my retort.

He flung a - ‘I’m not fucking around’ - dollar figure at me. My jaw would have dropped, but I'm a trained salesman and never flinched. As I began to describe my 'ride' and all its particular quirks and features, that young man stepped out of his car and strode towards mine - with keen interest.

For shits and giggles, I suggested a test drive and in a flash, we were zipping along a winding country road. That put my car through some strenuous paces. Wide gummy tires gripped tight curves and bends and flew up hills, and sprinted long stretches of the flat open road. The tachometer easily kissed 7,000 rpm a few times, as the engine roared in approval. That young man was smiling from ear to ear.

When we got back to our original spot - and after examining the guts under the hood and up, and around my four-wheel consort - we exchanged contact information and parted ways. I thought nothing more was to come. An hour later I was proved wrong.

I was sitting in my living room when I received his text. It was a better than fair offer to purchase my car. He added one request; the deal had to be finalized by today. NOW, my jaw had dropped.

I stopped what I was doing and quickly drove to my 'car guy', to see what he had in stock. I was actually relieved when he announced his verdict, "I don't have anything good at the number you're looking for Paul."

After all the repairs and the money I'd just put into my car, the offer I had was great - just not GREAT enough to put me into a comparable car.

I texted back the disappointing news to the man with the offer and thought for a second, “I think I should keep my mouth shut next time.” Then I thought again, “What if, he’d offered me a couple of thousand dollars more?”

Do you have anything that you WOULDN’T sell - REGARDLESS of the price?
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

If I could have found a good car at the price I was looking for, that young man would be driving my car.
I drove my car to the lake today and took the corners - extra tight. Damn, that thing tracks on rails.😎👍❗❗

I thought long and hard about what I own or possess, that I wouldn’t sell for the right price. And you know what? I couldn’t come up with anything that I wouldn’t give, for the right price.

Am I shallow?
Hmmm…🤔

My body for starters...lol...My antiques from my parents and grandparents as they have sentimental value..I would not sell my soul to the devil either...I would not sell myself out, yet do sell myself in a way and my talents in my work world to land new clients.. I would sell that white car which is a beauty, if it did not handle well in our Canadian winters..Give me something reliable and affordable that can survive all 4 seasons here over something that looks flashy but has no real value... Just my opinion here Hun...xoxo

I would like to say that I wouldn't sell some of the mementos I have from my mom - like the painting. But you're right, at some point if enough were offered, I probably would cave.

My current car - I am not attached to very much at all, and if someone offered way more than it was worth, well I could pay for a lot of uber and lyft rides until what I want comes into stock at a dealer.

I'm hardly going anywhere except grocery shopping these days, anyway.

Seriously...why didn't he throw in his car with the cash? I can't help but wonder why it had to be finalized so quickly....bet he was on the 'lam'

Since I'm at the point in my life where I'm giving things away to the next generation, I can't think of anything that is price tag exempt.

Just goes to show, you never know when an unexpected opportunity may come along. How you choose to react to it makes the difference. I have many keepsakes that are reminders of special times with my grandparents, parents and my kids. I find it hard to part with them despite ongoing efforts to 'downsize'. I don't think my decisions would change no matter what $ was offered.

That was my first 65 Plymouth Satellite, bought in 68, I was on my way home to get married, sold it in 71 on my way to Korea. Wanted my wife to have new car.
In 75' I bought another one that still looked that good, new motor, transmission and all new under carriage, I was the third owner. A friend replaced the A/C with a larger one, a/c was rare in 65 and not very efficient but a must have in Dallas Tx.
In 78 I was detailing it in a park when a young man walked up and said his Dad wanted to buy him a car like that for his first car! Like u I thew a ridiculous price at him, an hour later, with a wad of cash in my pocket, as I watched them drive off i'm saying "WHY DID DO THAT"

That's it... if enough were offered. How much is enough?
I look at people who've lost everything in a flood or hurricane and wonder what I would do. Continue... I guess. I have a backup plan for all my pictures and videos. I hope I never have to use it.
I rely too heavily on my car to live without one. Now... if I lived closer to the city...? hmmm, then I might have put your plan into action. 😊

Yeah... That's a given that pets wouldn't be negotiable.
That's pretty much how I'd feel. Everything else would be on the table! 👍
Getting back to those pets... Now THAT cat... (if I had one), could go for a price. 😊

Here's the story...
He, was driving his father's BMW. The father had just separated from the mother and had left. The dad needed his car and the son needed one THAT day.
Now what he was doing looking for a car in a park? Good question. That's your détective side kicking in. lol 😂
Good questions.... all of them.
I'm in the same boat as you. It's such a shame that I can't find a good home for my books.

I have a lot O would sell material things that need to go but to the right buyer for the right price: antique crystal goblets [ I am using them no sense in hoarding them] a lot of valuable Limoge [ not using] and an hist of other inherited thingies- Craigs List is Out. But I will keep my body and soul for myself along with my intelligence. PS Great post!!

Another option for your books - there’s an organization in Minneapolis called the Women’s Prison Book Project. Just what it sounds like. There may be something similar in your area.

I'm in a similar position; 'to the right buyer', is such a challenge though.
I wonder if there's any hope or will I become my grandfather. His legacy was so much stuff - we're STILL sifting through it.
Oh well. I've often wondered how old people have so much stuff: no one wants it.
Is that sad? 🤔

Hmmm... Now THERE'S something that I never would have thought about. 😶
I wonder if women in prisons read Jean Paul Sartre or Karl Jung? 🤔
If I was the prison librarian, I'd start them off with a light (heavily used) paperback - 'A Hitchhikers Guide to The Galaxy'.
On second thought... I'm going to keep THAT one. Maybe one of my daughters would enjoy it.
I'm staring at my bookshelves now... Sheesh, what a challenge. 🤔❗❗😎

Thought provoking indeed..I love to collect things..and have given or donated some o f them..The only things I would never surrender are the ones from My Mom & Dad..(Neither are still with Us ) I have cleared out relatives homes after we lost them so know all about stuff left behind..It was important to them so it was important to Us to make sure we handled everything correctly.

I'm a 'Car', guy so I will start here. For me, IF the person would enjoy and respect the ride, it might be for sale for the right price. Where it may be going is sometimes more important than a few extra $$$. IF I built/restored the vehicle myself, I have more of a vested interest in the vehicle and less likely to sell, however unfortunately for me, I can't keep them all. If I just bought vehicle at auction, and didn't do much to it, I am more likely to part with it for the right price.

I also have a few things, mostly items that remind me of someone special in my life that are probably worthless or of very little value, but are priceless to me and I would never part with them. Like some of your other commentators above, I would rather either hand them down to the next generation, or give them to someone who would really appreciate them. Great post.

As a car guy, you can relate. My car has been a work in progress and I have it sooo close to where I want it. It's extremely nimble, powerful and tracks turns at 90 degree angles... effortlessly. That guy was blown away.
What prevented the sale was my car guy's lack of a comparable replacement. And I can't live without a ride in this city - while waiting for the right car to show up. 😶
True about stuff that reminds you of someone or 'keepsakes'.
But the last thing I want, is to see what happens when others have left this planet.
Their 'keepsakes' are thrown out.
