Groups and friends network changes update

Just wanted to give a heads-up on upcoming changes to groups and friends network. Our first set of changes are to enable better sorting (e.g., by last visit) of member lists. To enable this, we had to make major changes to the structure of the databases which had grown to almost 100 million rows. Unfortunately, this will either be a very smooth and happy transition or very bumpy. We will be rolling out the changes on smaller sites on Wednesday, and if smooth roll out to this one on Thursday.

Also, we've put several of the developers on "fix existing bugs" jobs for the next two weeks so the next release should address many issues. I really appreciate all the member feedback and support and
exciting for the improvements to come.

I'm really trying to resist the urge to call you a comment whore and give you a hard time about posting just to keep your spot on the top male bloggers list. (Hey, [blog travelingintexas] hasn't been around lately, I have to have someone to pick on.)

In all honesty it's been great having you check in and keeping us informed. The last updates seemed to go in without any big hitches, which is always a plus. So, since I'm sure you get to hear a whole lot more bitching than thanks, let me take this opportunity to say thanks and job well done so far.

Have tongue, will use it. Repeatedly.

I think this is great news to hear and will ease some of the tension of many members of groups and also the moderators.

Believe me when I tell you Andrew, things have not only been tough on you and your team of programmers end, but tough on many moderators of active groups trying to keep from losing the members interest in the groups and the entire site in general; At least I know that is true for me and a few other moderators and members that have try to keep the complaints to a minimum by explaining and sharing our knowledge of what programming, upgrades and updates can entail.

Once again thanks for all the hard work that you and your team of programmers been doing as of lately, and also for this update so we members can be aware and prepared.

Andrew,I do want to point out one thing that may be of cause to the group settings with not being able to update them. It seems that the meta tags (keywords) in the group settings are not being stored or saved. I am not sure if that is a cause of moderator of groups not being able to update their group settings, but I would assume it is a part of the db structure of the group settings.

If you can just fix the every weekend dead stop, that's all that we ask. Improvements are not needed. In fact, we'd be glad if things went back the way they were before, as long as we could post something on Friday and have it show up some time before Monday. Thank you for listening.

Good day.

I participate in one of the fastest growing groups in Ontario, if not all of Canada, and we have no problems, despite the problems, keeping our members interested in the group, posting interesting topics, participating in the chat room, and meeting etc. We have a lovely lady for a mod too.

We are going to have our first meet and greet in May.

If some of you are having problems keeping your groups going, it may not be the sites fault. There are mods out there that dont have it and their members dont have it either. We dont have no DRAMA or SPAM either in the local group I participate in.

I am very happy and I look forward to the changes.

Steve

I too, along with the greater majority of my members, am rapidly losing faith in the aforementioned *Improvements*. It seems that there hasnt been 10 consecutive days without some kind of hitch since I started my group last summer.

One suggestion I would make though is to eradicate the unused profiles from those that havent used the site for say 12 months. That way we will be able to see just how many *real* subscribers there are to the site. There are defunct profiles from 2000 still showing in the top 10 when one searches. Not a great advert for consistency really!

If they do that, they lose member count, and thus, advertising revenue. It is not in the best interests of the site to reduce member count, even though many of the profiles have been turned off for extended periods of time.

Andrew replies on 4/27/2006 10:13 pm:
Yes, the new version will just show active members and friends.

not sure why we need to know the last time someone signed in to a group. but sure am happy to see that someone is looking into the existing bugs. thank you. (putting on seat belt)

Just kill the group review button.

And make the low lifes climb out of the wood work to make a verifiable individual complaint or dissapear in there own excrement.

and i know i can't spell!

Is it possible to add a "Remove this member from my network" Link on the member's profile? It's easier than to search through thousands of member's on the network!

Also, why can't the site automaticly delete members whose profile are no longer active from our network?

Ihave been informed of 5 invitations to join my network, but when i go to my home page there i'm told there are no invitations pending.
Can anyone tell me where they have disappeared to? There are some men out there now thinking i'm very rude for apparently ignoring them.
Thank you in anticipation

I truly understand the desire to add features to a product to enhance it's appeal. In this case it makes me envision putting a turbo-charger on a dead motor. Get it running right before you try to boost performance.

Hung...ditto, Amen, and HALLELUJAH!!!! That's the bottom line as far as I'm concerned!!!

If you are strong and push through the pain and the fear, you often find that happiness is waiting for you on the other side.

fallmoon, i just had a girl join my group just so she could post advertisements for her video chat porn site, she posted about it in several different threads. i went back and deleted them all and reported her to customer service and now her profile has been removed. she even advertised in her profile which website it was.

Exactly....The bells and whistles do not impress me if the train still doesn't run

I concur with all the comments passed thus far. If this site was a car it would NEVER be out of the garage as it wouldnt have ran right since purchase. No use having a 100 mph speed demon with less than 10 miles a year on the clock! Plus, you couldnt sell it with the tag line of,,,One careful owner, one frustrated owner, maybe?

The blogs and groups are a major factor wht a lot of folks decide to stay here. The more serious group moderators should be able to have a lot more controls whereby they can set their own word filters. That way the posts would be almost instant and a lot more people would take an interest theirin.

Also, get rid of ALL the profiles that aint used the site in 12 months. Its senseless to take up YOUR webspace with profiles created as a one-off to see what the sites about.

If you had dead leaves in your yard would YOU stack them on your doorstep every year? or would you burn them?

yeah thats kinda true about the profiles thing too. or at least make their profile inactive first and have them sent an automated email letting them know that their profile is inactive with a link to either delete or reactivate.

The "improvements" to the site don't seem to have covered the weekends, where everything runs at either two speeds, Slow and Stop. We are eagerly waiting this to improve on a greater scale.

The non members who have either left through natural migration into relationships or who have not renewed their membership should be deleted after a set amount of time as this is probably slowing a lot of the site down.

also, several times I have mentioned my group to other members on AgoraCosmopolitan Dating and they have asked me to send them an invitation to the group. I was thinking it would be nice to have some way of doing. like say, underneath of the members list on the first page there could be a link that says 'send an invitation to this group' for the moderator (or other members of the group too?) and when you click on it it would pull up a little window where you put in an AgoraCosmopolitan Dating members handle and then click send and it goes automatically to their AgoraCosmopolitan Dating inbox in message center etc. or something like that at least..just a thought...lol

So if our networks are acting strangely (will only show me first page of network friends, continually tells me about two network invites even though I've repeatedly accepted one and declined another) we should just hold tight for awhile?

Thank you for the updates. It really helps when we know what's going on.

Yeah, I'm still [blog 1hotwahine]

andrew...
many of us still want to know who to contact or what the situation is with regards to the Magazine.. there are a lot of unhappy campers there too! no one seems to get any answers from anywhere on the problems, or possible fix. i have read a number of folks are not paying anymore money to the site for the lack of direct information and a totally dysfunctional system.. customers don't much like being ignored.

thank you

I like to say that my new "pending" invitations still do not show up.
I have sent 3 more invitations in the past week and none are showing up, only the 4 existing ones.

in that sense i'm affraid that my list of existing friends is
not updated either.
